We’ve already mentioned exfoliating in a previous blog, but why is it so important? What is it that regularly exfoliating your skin does that benefits your complexion? Jordan Essentials breaks down the basics of exfoliating – how it works, why you need to make it a part of your skin care routine, and some things to be careful about.
Exfoliators are a type of face or body wash, cream, or cleanser that contains small, solid particles. Depending on what brand or type of exfoliator you use, these little beads will be made of different materials. Microbeads, tiny balls of plastic, were banned in the US in 2015, but many companies have been using natural, less environmentally damaging alternatives for much longer. At Jordan Essentials, we like using jojoba beads in our gentle exfoliant.
So, what, exactly, is the benefit to scrubbing your face with lots of tiny beads? Jordan Essentials can break it down for you.
Unclogging Your Pores
This is probably the most commonly known reason people exfoliate. A good exfoliator can help clear out your pores, which are easily clogged with buildup from bacteria, oil, and general dirt on your face that’s too small to see. This buildup in your pores can lead to unsightly blackheads, pimples or a full breakout. If you regularly wear makeup, clogged pores can be a big problem, and exfoliating will keep them clean.
Removing Dead Skin
It’s not just naturally produced oil or bacteria that build up in your pores – dead skin cells will, too. These often result in the same kind of problems, and regularly exfoliating your skin will wash dead cells away with everything else. This has a couple of added benefits, too – your pores will look smaller, and your skin will be better at absorbing the moisturizer you follow up your exfoliating with.
Helping Marks and Blemishes
While exfoliating probably won’t miraculously remove acne scars, it will go a long way towards preventing scars and blemishes. This is because, in removing dead skin cells, it encourages your skin to produce more, fresh cells, rebuilding areas that have become discolored or potentially scarred.
Being experienced skin care professionals, Jordan Essentials can’t talk about good exfoliation practice without a warning against overdoing it. As you might imagine, using an abrasive substance to clean your face – even if it’s the mildest exfoliator – can potentially do some damage. Either scrubbing too hard or using it too often will cause severe irritation to your skin, causing it more damage in the long term.
Always apply exfoliator gently, after wetting your face with warm water, and be just as gentle washing it off, before following it up with moisturizer.
